Montana Joins Growing Number of States Requiring AACCA

SPIRIT NEWS

At their April Board Meeting, the Montana High School Association (MHSA) Executive Board approved the following regulation regarding spirit (cheer) squads: MHSA member schools’ spirit squads (cheer squads) are allowed to perform stunts ONLY if the spirit coach has completed and is current with the AACCA Safety Certification Program. This affects squads beginning with the 2006-07 school year.

Spirit coaches are now, because of this change, no longer required to complete the MHSA Coaches Education Program which had been mandatory prior to the 2006-07 school year. The Board felt that the AACCA Safety Certification was more sport specific than the MHSA Coaches’ Education Program and would, therefore, benefit spirit coaches more effectively. This course is being offered at the MCA Clinic in Great Falls, and further information relative to other certification dates and sites will be coming to member schools in May.
